Master the Basic Elements - and Tools
The vector illustration project is a useful entry point for understanding a wide range of design elements (line, shape, value, color) as well as essential Adobe Illustrator tools (select, direct select, pen, swatches, pattern, color guide).
The goal is to create a value study with at least 3 steps (highlights, midtones, shadows) and a complementary-colored background pattern.
1 Pick a Photo
Look through your photos or find an image online that has a distinct range of highlights, midtones and shadows.
2 Trace Values
Using the pen tool, trace the outer silhouette shape first - then the highlight and shadow shapes.
3 Make a Pattern
Using the pattern maker, create an pattern appropriate to the subject of your value study.
4 Refine Colors
Using the color guide, refine the contrast and color range of your illustration.
5 Export Image
Export your image as a .jpg file with the 1024px as the longest dimension. (e.g., 1024 x 768 or 600 x 1024)
